Background, Education and Focus

A self-proclaimed “Marketing Nerd,” Perrin has cultivated a career spanning over 25 years across multiple industries, demonstrating a deep passion for marketing. From a young age, Finlay-Brown showcased his entrepreneurial spirit, founding his own digital design and web service company at just 16. This early start foreshadowed his future successes. After completing high school, he took a gap year to explore his career options before securing a junior position with Leo Burnett Advertising in North Sydney. There, he had the opportunity to work on high-profile projects for major brands like BMW and Kelloggs. This experience laid the foundation for his future in marketing.

“When I started in music, I couldn’t understand why so many artists didn’t have a plan. They just kinda threw it out there and hoped for the best. The graphic designer didn’t speak to the photographer, the distributor didn’t speak to the publicist, the producer didn’t take feedback, and the booking agent was just throwing out pitches without even knowing what the artist was working on. I found it confusing, it seemed disfunctional. I saw an immediate opportunity to change things up. All it needed was an integrated approach to get everyone on the same page.” – Perrin Finlay-Brown

To grow his skillset, Perrin pursued a Bachelor of Applied Information Technology with a major in Marketing at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He was recognised with the prestigious Chancellor’s Award (Second Year) for achieving a High Distinction Average Grade and the Innovation Prize (Final Year) for his work on a sophisticated e-marketing project. These accolades, combined with his passion for business development and innovation, solidified his focus on a career in marketing and brand development. He also became a member of the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) and the International Advisory Board CES (Consumer Electronics Show) held in Las Vegas annually, further cementing his professional commitment in this space.

A tried and proven method to help artists make their mark!

Following his studies, he embarked on a three-year journey with a nationwide IT services firm, where he rose through the ranks, moving from business development into leadership and eventually assuming the role of General Manager. This equipped him with strong leadership skills and deepened his understanding of business, yet his passion for areas he had loved since childhood—sports and music—remained at the forefront of his ambitions.

“The music industry is tough, but it’s the most fun job I’ve ever had. It’s a grind, you have to show up day after day, there is no time to rest. You have to get used to having 50 No’s before you get that YES! There are no shortcuts, and i’ve found that nearly every overnight success story has a decade long back story. But if you love it and you want it bad enough, it can be a wonderful and rewarding place to work.” – Perrin Finlay-Brown

From Sports to Music, and the Future

In 2009, Perrin transitioned into the sports industry, taking the role of senior analyst at leading sports marketing agency Complete Sports/Sportex. This role enabled him to develop his expertise internationally, as the agency worked with global promoters, companies, and talent. During his time there, he contributed to programs with prominent entities such as A1GP, Cricket NSW, The Wallabies, the Government, the NRL, and the Crusty Demons. The fast-paced and dynamic nature of this industry gave him invaluable insights into global events marketing.

Despite the excitement of working in sports, Perrin spent three years living in airports as he serviced over 48 clients for the agency. Yearning to lay down some roots and an opportunity to apply his marketing expertise in a new space, he began exploring other options. One of his notable projects in sports marketing involved helping Tamworth secure grants to build the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) through a sports economy audit. Recognizing the potential for a new career path, he applied for the role of Manager of Destination Development for Tamworth, including overseeing the marketing and commercial sponsorship aspects of the world-renowned Tamworth Country Music Festival.

After a rigorous interview process, he was offered the position in 2011 and relocated to Tamworth, known as the Country Music Capital of Australia. Over the next few years, he played a pivotal role in completing a five-year strategic festival plan, which included securing amd renewing sponsors like Toyota and Destination NSW. In 2013, he left Tamworth and founded Market The Music, a company that has since become a driving force in the industry.

With a wealth of knowledge in the marketing and brand development space, a drive to help people achieve their full potential, and a love of music, the organisation continues to help artists young and old, experienced or just starting out. Perrin’s journey, and the professionals he has connected with (Producers, Publicists, Agents, Festival Directors, Videographers, Stylists, Content Directors and many more), all fueled by passion, innovation, and determination, have established the organisation as a respected industry player.

“I firmly believe that a career in music is a journey. I often say, it’s a marathon, not a sprint. In the digital age, artists build, rather than break. The only way you don’t make it, is if you stop fighting for what you want to achieve.” – Perrin Finlay-Brown
